Rube Goldberg was a cartoon and mechanical engineer that began syndication in 1915.  His cartoons depicted machines that took a mundane task, such as opening a door and used compound machine to do it instead.

During this project you will create a Rube Goldberg machine to accomplish a simple task as illustrated in his cartoons.  Your machine must incorporate the following:

·         At least three different types of simple machines

·         Seven different energy transfers (in other words you must have no less than seven machines)

·         You must either bring the project in or create a video of your project.

·         If you create a video you must have all of the group members in the video.  You may get creative with this as long as you are safe about it.

·         You will create a blueprint before you build your machine and bring it to me for approval.

·         You must complete a poster at the end that graphically illustrates your Rube Goldberg machine along with all of the energy transformation.

You may not use or do the following:

·         You may not use power tools for the creation of your project (your parent may however).

·         You may not use fire, fire crackers or chemicals of any kind.

·         You may not harm animals. You must have approval from your parent and myself before building your project.

·         If you build your project to bring in to school it must be no larger than 1 cubic meter.

·         You must have parental supervision.

Going Further:

·         Spend some time in the library with your group to edit your video.

·         Make a themed Rube Goldberg.

·         Make a short movie that incorporates your Rube Goldberg Project
